India’s two- and three-wheelers

10 March 2019

We mentioned the Royal Enfield motorcycle in a previous post as the bike that most men in India aspire to own.  However, they are expensive and there’s a waiting list to get one! Though we see these motorcycles often, the numbers are nothing in comparison to the gazillions of Honda/Heros that there are on the roads all over India. This bike is the modern workhorse of the nation…

But we are sure that not so long ago when there weren’t so many motorcycles on the roads, the vehicle of choice was the bicycle. There are still a lot of bicycles here and as cyclists ourselves we are interested in some of their many uses and adaptations. Below is just a few of the ones we have during our time here…

Firstly, they are, of course, used for transporting humans…

Note that the woman in the picture below is casually riding side-saddle ans carrying a small child (you may have to zoom in)…

Then they can be employed to carry just about anything else, from gas canisters…

to flowers…

to water…

to bundles of just about anything from firewood, farm produce and other random ‘stuff’…

to washing machines and fridges (in this case one of each!)…

things to sell (note the new and old comparison!)…

and, of course, two people and all their belongings…
